One of the oldest stories from Christianity is that of Adam and Eve in the Old Testament, where the woman is blamed for all the sins of mankind. Eve convinced Adam to eat from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden and is punished with childbearing and subservience. Because Eve tempted Adam, God held her responsible for all the sins of mankind.

The poisonous apple and the forbidden fruit are recurring motifs in storytelling which continue to perpetuate the female as the evil temptress. It appears again in Snow White in the form of an old hag who tempts the innocent Snow White with a poisonous apple.

Shown here in this painting, Eve holds an innocuous apple against the backdrop of a snake motif. It is contemporary take on the apple and the snake theme.
